English-Govt Spending Not Value for Money

Thursday, July 30, 2009

ACT New Zealand Associate Finance Spokesman John Boscawen today called on Finance Minister Bill English to immediately cut Government spending, in the wake of his astounding admission that New Zealand households are not getting a good deal for the taxes they pay.

“Under sustained questioning on the increase in Government spending under National – which amounts to $100 per household per week – Mr English let slip that the average householder “is actually not getting the full $100 value.” Mr Boscawen said.

“In other words, Mr English is ripping us off. What New Zealander would borrow $100 to spend on something worth $70? The answer is no one, unless someone else was paying for it, as Mr English is doing with our taxes.

“If Mr English recognises the lack of value for money in Government spending, how can he continue to indulge Prime Minister John Key’s wishlist of projects, including the cycleway and insulation for housing?

“ACT is now the only option for those who believe in smaller Government and lower taxes – National has sold out,” Mr Boscawen said.
